We want to restore affordable housing to the UK.
Home ownership is a great tradition of this great nation, it allows social mobility and allows us to put down roots and embrace community ties. However, that tradition has been shattered by a rigged system which has empowered greedy landlords. Hard working key workers are being locked out of owning property in their own country, in the land they grew up in and to a society they have contributed so much to. They say ‘the Englishman’s home is his castle’.
Following WW2, the government implemented a wide range of housing reforms for military workers rewarding them for their sacrifices for the nation. Today, following the atrocities of covid our national heroes have not been rewarded in the same way.
Instead, they are struggling with the cost-of-living crisis, spending more of half their incomes on greedy landlords who allow them to live in horrid conditions. Our citizens castles have been broken down and instead they are left as serfs 12 hour days for greedy barons stealing their wealth.
We’ve clapped for them now its time to give them the keys.
That is why we need to establish a Housing Development Corporation. Inspired by the successful post-War schemes that delivered hundreds of thousands of homes a year, we propose a new government corporation to embark on.
The Housing Development Corporation will be empowered to:
- Exercise eminent domain to obtain sites appropriate for redevelopment.
- Work with the best private sector firms to deliver new housing.
- Sell houses exclusively to first-time buyers.
- Sell houses at the price of construction, eliminating profiteering.
The Housing Development Corporation will allow us to make mass homeownership a reality again, to give the hard working people of this country security, and to end the rigged system of landlord exploitation and profiteering.
